You’re not late, but you could miss the train
You’re jogging through Roma Termini, backpack half-zipped, sweat forming. Google Maps said it was an 18-minute walk. It didn’t mention that Platform 23 might as well be in another timezone. The train doors close. You sigh. You grab a sad sandwich. You promise yourself: next time, I’ll plan better.
I’ve had my own version of that moment. Most travelers do. That’s why I put together Travel Smart in Italy, a real-world guide built from years of living, traveling, and helping others do the same.
1. Trying to squeeze in everything
10 days. 5 cities. Day trips in between. It looks efficient on paper. In reality? You’re spending more time in transit than at dinner.
Italy rewards slowing down. Choose fewer bases. Stay longer. Let your days breathe. Some of my best memories have come from doing… nothing. A long lunch. A quiet street. No plan.
2. Not booking the big sights early enough
Vatican and Colosseum tickets go fast, especially in summer. People assume they’ll just grab them when they arrive and end up scrambling. Even the paid tours fill up. Most other attractions don’t require this much advance planning — but these two do.
Here are the tours I recommend and use:
Book early and plan the rest of your day around them.

3. Winging the trains
Train stations in Italy — especially Rome, Florence, Milan, Bologna — can be chaotic. Not charming. Not always intuitive. (Okay — Milan Centrale is actually pretty beautiful.)
Even now, I give myself 15+ minutes at the big ones. Platforms change last minute. Some are a five-minute walk from the main hall. I’ve missed trains for this exact reason, and I live here. See my other post 12 Tips for Train Travel in Italy – From a Local.

4. Landing and hitting the ground running
I see this all the time. Someone lands in Italy at 11 a.m. and expects to start sightseeing right away. It’s possible — but between the two hours of sleep you got on the overnight flight and the jet lag, you’re unlikely to do much more than walk around, have a drink, and eat a relaxing dinner.
Don’t schedule anything rigid on arrival day. Let yourself land.

5. Expecting to eat whenever you want
Lunch ends around 2:30. Dinner usually starts at 7 or later. That 5:30 craving? You’ll find locked doors and “chiuso” signs.
Plan meals around local hours. If you’re hungry mid-afternoon, stop at a bar for a sandwich or pastry. Grab a spritz. Sit in the piazza. That is the evening.

6. Underestimating the heat (and the hills)
Italy is gorgeous. It’s also hot — and hilly. Sightseeing at 2 p.m. in July? Brutal. I’ve done it. I regretted it.
Start early. Hydrate constantly. Use the public fountains. And yeah, nap if you need to. This isn’t a competition.

7. Trying to rely on iMessage
Italy runs on WhatsApp. It’s how restaurants confirm reservations, how your host sends check-in info, how drivers contact you. iMessage or SMS won’t cut it.
Download WhatsApp before you arrive. It works on WiFi, uses your regular number, and makes everything easier.

🔁 Quick Recap: How to Avoid Common Italy Trip Mistakes
What’s the biggest mistake travelers make in Italy?
Trying to do too much. Fewer cities. More breathing room.
Do I need to book major sights like the Vatican in advance?
Yes. Especially in summer — even paid tours can sell out.
How can I avoid missing a train in Italy?
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Check the departure boards (not just the app). Some platforms are further than you think.
Is there free WiFi and good mobile coverage in Italy?
WiFi is hit or miss. Use an eSIM or international plan. WhatsApp is essential.
