Where to Stay in Rome (on any budget)
First time in Rome? I get it—this city is overwhelming, and picking the right area to stay in makes or breaks your trip. Generally, you want to be near the historical center (think Pantheon, Monti, Trevi) or in Trastevere if you’re after charm and nightlife. Here’s where I’d stay at each price level. And yes, all of these places have air conditioning.
Oh, also: In this guide, I’m sticking to hostels and hotels—and here’s why. AirBNB-style rentals are driving up housing costs, forcing locals out of their neighborhoods, and hollowing out Italian cities.
If we tourists want to experience local culture, let’s keep it so the locals can afford to live in their own town. Hotels and hostels can help minimize the damage, letting us enjoy our travels without contributing to the housing crisis. Plus, it’s just easier—no awkward meetups with a host to grab keys or juggling arrival times. A front desk is criminally underrated.
Note: Prices and amenities change, so check the links for current rates and details. If you find something you like, book it—good places in Rome don’t stay available for long.

Smart Saver ($) – Budget-Friendly
Hostel:
✅ YellowSquare Rome – If you’re doing the hostel thing, this is the one. Steps from Termini, easy access to everywhere, and a solid social vibe. This is my go-to.

✅ Ostello Bello Rome – Another solid hostel option with a cool crowd and a great location.
Private Stays:
🏛️ La Casa Di Amy – Near Termini. Super convenient for transport, but don’t expect an overly charming setting. Good value if you just need a place to crash.
🏛️ Casa Cleo – Monti. A solid budget-friendly stay in one of the coolest areas in Rome. Walkable to everything.
🏛️ Madonna della Neve – Also in Monti. The perfect balance between central and quiet.
🌿 Trastevere Art – Trastevere. If you’re after cobblestone streets, great food, and late-night strolls, this is where you want to be.
